The Literacy and Executive Functioning Advancement Program (LEAP) – Professional Instructional Learning and Outcomes Trial (PILOT) is an applied research study. This yearlong study (Sept 2025–June 2026) explores how elementary teachers in a Western Canadian school district implement metacognitive strategies and progress monitoring practices to support student growth in grades 2–7. The core instructional approach is Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), which combines cognitive and self-regulation techniques to enhance writing and executive functioning. Participating teachers are also learning progress monitoring practices consistent with contemporary approaches to help students achieve ambitious growth on core academic skills.

As general artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly infused into our lives, it seems harder and harder to avoid AI in our work. For the LEAP-PILOT study, we do not endorse one specific AI or ask that you use AI at all. You can use AI if […]
In this 10-minute video, we watch two teachers talk through the mechanics of progress monitoring on graphing paper. The process they use is not identical to what we’re doing as part of LEAP-PILOT, and still, the mechanics are highly similar.
Dr. Stephanie Stollar is a titan in the applied reading research field, and in this quick video from our training we learned about 5 quick tips for effective progress monitoring.
Did you know that the process of progress monitoring is affixed to the response-to-intervention model of identifying students with Specific Learning Disorders (called ‘Learning Disabilities’ in Canada)? From the research-practitioner side, many are looking to implement this new model and are using this 2022 textbook to […]
Progress monitoring is systematic in that we follow the same process for making decisions about adjusting our instruction to meet student need throughout the year. The National Center on Intensive Intervention summarized three key ways to make data-based decisions.
Monitoring student progress of academic skills is a feature of educational science that is not to be understated. Check out this complete, free training module from the IRIS Center on how monitoring student progress in reading development works procedurally.
